Weekly Message from Mrs Warren

We have had a truly wonderful Book Week in school, filled with excitement, creativity and a shared love of reading. The children have taken part in a variety of activities throughout the week and it has been lovely to see them enjoying books together. With the beautiful weather, many classes even took their reading outside, making the most of the sunshine while sharing stories with friends.

We were delighted to welcome Mike Dodsworth, who spent time reading with the children, and we are very grateful to the many parents and guest staff readers who joined us to share stories. As this year celebrates the National Year of Reading, it has been especially heartwarming to see so many children inspired by books.

Year 2 also held a very special Stay and Pray session and it was wonderful to see so many parents join us. Together we listened to the children’s liturgy reflecting on the most special book of all, the Bible, reminding us how God’s word guides us in our daily lives.

Our Scholastic Book Fair has been running all week and we would like to thank all the families who have supported it. Your generosity will help us raise money for new books so that our children can continue to grow in their love of reading.

On Thursday we welcomed a representative from CAFOD, who spoke to the children about the Big Lent Walk taking place on Saturday 14th March at Langdon Nature Discovery Park. We look forward to coming together as a school community to support this important cause during the season of Lent.

Next week we are excited to celebrate Science Week, and Mrs Warman has planned some fun and engaging activities for all the children to enjoy as they explore and discover together.

Have a wonderful weekend with your families,

Mrs Warren

Measles Outbreak

There is a large outbreak of measles in children in North London.  Some children have been hospitalised.  Our proximity to the capital means there will be cases of measles in Essex children.  If you are a parent or guardian of a child who is not up to date with vaccinations now is the time to get your child protected.  This can be done by contacting the East of England community and school-aged immunisation service on 0300 555 5055 or through their GP practice.  Advice to parents/carers on measles can be found on the Government webpages and general information on measles is available on the NHS webpages.

Branch 4 - Desert to Garden

This half-term, the theme for our Religious Education Curriculum Branch is Desert to Garden. For this, the children will learn that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day’ (1 Cor 15:3).

In this branch, pupils will study the season of Lent and its culmination in the events of Holy Week. They will learn about the Paschal Triduum at the heart of the Catholic Church’s Liturgy and life. The title of this branch points both to the liturgical journey from the desert of Lent to the garden of Resurrection, but also to the Paschal journey from darkness to light.

Recommended Reading Books

Our school staff have chosen their favourite books to recommend to children as part of our ongoing commitment to promoting reading for pleasure.  We hope your families will enjoy reading these books together.

This week Miss Stow has recommended Ben Miller’s ‘Diary of a Big Bad Wolf’ which is perfect for readers in Year 2 and their families.

The story is a funny and imaginative take on classic fairytales. It is told from the wolf’s point of view, which puts a clever twist on what we think we know and makes it really fun to read.

Showcasing our Children's Writing

Here is a QR code to view some of our amazing children's writing from this term.  We are so lucky to teach such creative children who love learning and writing.  Our teachers have shared this with the children too so they can all feel proud of their writing skills and see how the stages of writing progress as they move through the school.

Today our whole school gathered for a beautiful Crib Service. As teachers read the Nativity story, the children reverently brought forward the figures of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, angels and wise men to complete our school crib. Each character placed at the crib reminded us of the joy, peace and hope that Christ's birth brings to our school community. Thank you to our pupils, and staff for sharing in this special moment of prayer and preparation. Year 2 Maths Fun! Last week we played The Exchange Game as part of our work on addition with exchange. The children learnt that ten ones is equal to one ten, and had great fun practising this through our class "shop"! Mrs Marchant was our wonderful shopkeeper, and the children loved exchanging their ten ones for one ten. Such a hands-on way to build confidence with place value! #Year2 #MathsInAction #PlaceValue #HandsOnLearning #PrimaryMaths #LearningIsFun
