Weekly Message from Mrs Warren

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week has been filled with many wonderful opportunities for our children to learn, celebrate and grow together in faith.

Our wonderful PTA met to discuss plans for the upcoming Father's Day celebrations and our Summer BBQ.  We are very grateful for the continued enthusiasm and commitment of our PTA members, whose support enriches the life of our school community.  On Thursday, our Cygnets enjoyed a lovely Father's Day Craft Stay and Play session, sharing special moments with their fathers and family members through creative activities and fun together.  Today, Year 1 welcomed families to their Stay and Pray session, a special time to pray and reflect together about God's love.  Year 1 shared prayer for a special prayer tree that is now in our foyer - you are more than welcome to read the prayers and add any of your own when you visit the school office.  We also marked our King's birthday in classes, where the children learnt about Trooping the Colour and the Royal Family, and we marked World Refugee Day, encouraging our children to think about the importance of compassion, dignity and welcoming others, values that are deeply rooted in our Catholic faith.  In addition, class photographs took place, capturing happy memories of another wonderful year at our school.

Our lovely Mrs Kapustka helped to transform our Mr Fox's library this week; our books have been organised and presented in beautiful boxes making it easier for children to browse, discover new authors and develop a lifelong love of reading.  Please visit our library, which is open daily from 8am until school opens at 8:30am.

Next week, we look forward to more exciting events and opportunities: Wagtails & Ducklings Father's Day Celebration, the Music Festival at Lincewood School (for selected Year 2 children) and the Summer Reading Challenge Assembly with visitors from Basildon Library.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership. It is a blessing to work together in nurturing our children as they grow in faith, love and learning. We pray that you all enjoy a restful and joyful weekend.

God bless.

   RE Newsletter

This half-term, the theme for our Religious Education Curriculum Branch is Dialogue and Encounter.

Reception

In this branch for Reception, children understand how to listen when others speak, develop attitudes of respect, and embrace similarities and differences. Children begin to understand what it means to be a good neighbour and speak about their experiences and understandings of religion and spirituality in a local context as part of the community they encounter each day. In learning about Jesus, children could begin to understand that Jesus lived in the past in a place called Nazareth in Palestine.

Year 1

‘For “In him we live and move and have our being”’ (Acts 17:28).

In this branch the starting point for dialogue in a Catholic school is understanding some things about the Catholic Church. For younger pupils, this begins with concrete experiences, meeting Christians from the local parish, including the parish priest where possible, and understanding what being a Christian means to them and how they live their lives. Where possible, pupils could also visit their local parish church to understand the building as a place where Catholics gather to celebrate their love of Christ in the church’s liturgies. Pupils begin learning about Judaism through understanding the Jewish belief in one God and that they have a sacred text, the Torah.

Year 2

In the dialogue dimension of this branch, pupils will begin by studying the parable of the Good Samaritan which Jesus told in answer to the question, ‘Who is my neighbour?’. Jesus concludes the parable by saying: “Go and do likewise” (Lk 10:37). In other words, he challenges us to put aside all differences and, in the face of suffering, to draw near to others with no questions asked’. Pupils will think about what this means in the community where they live and look at how Christians work together to support their local community, for example, food bank initiatives or care for refugees.  In the encounter part of this branch, pupils will learn more about Judaism as part of the religious education curriculum.

Recommended Reading Books

Our school staff have chosen their favourite books to recommend to children as part of our ongoing commitment to promoting reading for pleasure.  We hope your families will enjoy reading these books together.

This week Mrs Ager has recommended Walking Through The Jungle by Julite Lacome.

Mrs Ager loves sharing this book with the children, it combines rhyme, repetition, movement and  animal sounds!

It encourages active participation as the children can copy the actions in the story as the little child explores the jungle and encounters lots of different animals.

The children are exposed to jungle animals and their sounds, helping them learn new words and make connections between animals and the sounds they make.

This book turns reading into an active experience rather than simply a listening activity, which is why this is certainly a favourite in Cygnets nursery!

Happy National Numeracy Day! We've had such a lovely day celebrating all things maths! The children came dressed up and explored how maths is used in real life and in different careers. We also became maths investigators for the day with some fun zoo animal challenges How many children could fit inside an elephant's footprint? Can we jump as far as a kangaroo? Which animal is the tallest? Who can measure the longest leap? So much fun, learning and teamwork all while building confidence with numbers! #nationalnumeracyday

Further reminder

Important - Sun Cream/Sun Hats

As the warm weather is expected to continue next week, please ensure you apply an all day sun cream to your child before they come to school/nursery.  Sun cream will not be topped up during the day for Year 1 and Year 2 children, therefore it is most important that sun cream has been applied before the children come to school.  All day long lasting sun cream formulas are designed to provide 8-12 hours of protection covering the duration of the school day.

Sun cream will be applied to Reception and Nursery children during the day as they are outside more often.

Please also ensure your child has a sun hat (named).  Nursery children will need to have a sun hat that can stay in nursery.

Thank you for your support.
