Weekly Message from Mrs Warren

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another joyful and enriching week in school. It was wonderful to see so many of our Year 1 parents attending the phonics meeting, where we shared the importance of reading at home and information about the upcoming phonics screening check—thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey.

We were also delighted to welcome our local MP Richard Holden to our school. He enjoyed meeting our pupils and seeing first-hand the warmth, enthusiasm, and strong values that make our school such a special place.

As we begin the Month of Mary, our children were beautifully introduced to this special time by Mrs Cassar through a Celebration of the Word honouring Mary, including praying the Rosary. Children gathered at our grotto to pray together today, reflecting on the first Sorrowful Mysteries—a peaceful and reverent experience for all involved.

Looking ahead to next week, we are excited to welcome our Reception families for Stay and Pray, offering a chance to share in your child’s liturgy. Year 2 will be visiting Basildon Library as part of our commitment to the National Year of Reading, and Year 1 will be enjoying a trip to Mountfitchet Castle to enrich their learning beyond the classroom.

We wish you all a lovely bank holiday weekend—let us hope for some sunshine! We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday.

This half-term, the theme for our Religious Education Curriculum Branch is To the Ends of the Earth.

Reception

In this branch for Reception, children will look at the events that flowed from the Resurrection and Ascension in the coming of the Holy Spirit. They will hear a simple version of the Pentecost and learn that the Holy Spirit is our friend who looks after us. They will also learn about our parish church.

Year 1

The focus of this branch 5 for Year 1 is for children to hear the story of the Road to Emmaus, the Ascension, and the story of Pentecost. They will complete an age-appropriate narrative cycle of the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and encounter the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the Apostles and then the early Church. ‘Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ (Mt 28:19)

Year 2

The theme for this term is Ascension, Pentecost and Conversion. The focus is on how people are changed by the Holy Spirit. Welcoming the Holy Spirit into our hearts invites conversion of the heart by receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit and allowing these to bear fruit in our lives. Children will explore how people are changed by the Holy Spirit through the examples of the apostles, St Paul and other saints and they will learn the names of the fruits of the Spirit.

Suggested Home Learning Ideas to support Religious Education

Nursery:

Week 3 - Say a short, simple prayer together (e.g. “Come Holy Spirit, help me today”)

Reception:

Week 3 - Write a prayer to the Holy Spirit.

Year 1:

Week 3 - Write a sentence about the story of Jesus’ Promise of the Holy Spirit and the Ascension.

Year 2:

Week 3 - We have been learning about the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Buy some vegetable or fruit seeds, nurture them, then watch them grow.

Recommended Reading Books

Our school staff have chosen their favourite books to recommend to children as part of our ongoing commitment to promoting reading for pleasure. We hope your families will enjoy reading these books together.

This week Mrs Marchant has recommended the Fairy Tales: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, written and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Mrs Marchant’s granddaughter loves this book and enjoys predicting what will happen next - whether the porridge will be too hot, too cold, or just right. She anticipates what she thinks is going to happen before each page turns. Because Mrs Marchant's granddaughter loves bears, this story is particularly special to her.

He spent time looking around, meeting our wonderful children, talking to Mrs Plormel about Forest School, and sharing all about his role.
