Welcome to Art and Design at St Anne Line Catholic Infant School. At St Anne Line, we believe that Art and Design should inspire, engage, and challenge pupils. Through a rich and carefully sequenced curriculum, we aim to nurture creativity, build confidence and resilience in self-expression, and develop artistic skills. Every child is an artist—we provide the tools, space, and inspiration to flourish.
Our Art and Design curriculum reflects our core values of Love, Learn, Pray, supporting every child to grow in creativity, confidence, and spiritual reflection. Rooted in our school motto, En Magna Constantia – With Great Determination, we provide consistent opportunities for children to explore, express, and enjoy art in all its forms.
Art at St Anne Line is enquiry-led, encouraging pupils to explore, question, and develop their ideas through observation, experimentation, and reflection.
Each unit is linked to a high-quality book, which provides context, inspiration, and a narrative framework for artistic exploration.
Units begin with an overarching enquiry question that frames the purpose of learning (e.g., “How can we show feelings through colour?”).
Each lesson includes a lesson-specific enquiry question, helping pupils focus their observation, try new techniques, and reflect on outcomes.
This approach ensures that learning is coherent, purposeful, and rooted in curiosity, allowing pupils to develop both technical skills and creative thinking in a structured, meaningful way.
Our curriculum is designed following the DfE Strong Foundations guidance, ensuring that:
Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced and progressively built from EYFS through KS1.
Pupils develop core artistic skills before moving to more complex techniques and concepts.
Units revisit key concepts, techniques, and vocabulary to reinforce understanding and secure foundational knowledge.
Pupils’ learning is assessed formatively to ensure progression and address gaps in understanding.
This approach guarantees that every child has the skills and confidence to succeed in Art, laying strong foundations for future artistic development.
Children explore a wide range of artistic experiences, developing their ability to express ideas and observations. They learn to:
Look closely at the world around them, noticing colour, shape, texture, pattern, and form.
Experiment with materials and techniques across drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, and mixed media.
Reflect on the work of a variety of artists, designers, and craft makers, drawing inspiration while developing their own artistic voice.
Document, evaluate, and refine their creative work, using sketchbooks or visual journals to record ideas and reflections.
Art at St Anne Line is closely linked to Religious Education. Pupils use artistic expression to deepen their understanding of faith, symbolism, and Scripture. Creative projects explore concepts such as:
Belonging
Creation
Celebrations
Stories from the Bible
Through these experiences, children recognise the beauty of God’s creation and are encouraged to use their artistic gifts to reflect gratitude, wonder, and compassion.
