Celebration of the Word and Assemblies

Prayer, Worship and Celebration of the Word

At the heart of our Catholic faith is our belief in God’s love for each one of us. God calls us into a loving relationship with Him, and just like any relationship, this grows through communication.

Prayer is how we speak and listen to God. Prayer and spirituality are at the centre of every part of school life, especially in our daily Celebrations of the Word and assemblies.

All children and staff take part in daily worship, either as a whole school or in their class. Each day has its own special theme of celebration:

Monday – Musical Celebration of the Word

Led by our Headteacher, this joyful celebration begins our week with music and prayer. We sing together, remembering the words of St Augustine: “The one who sings, prays twice.” Hymns and action songs help children to pray with energy, joy and movement.

Tuesday – Catholic Social Teaching & Special Celebrations

On Tuesdays, we gather to learn about how we can live out the Gospel in our world today. Themes are often linked to Catholic Social Teaching (such as caring for creation or helping those in need) or to special events like Black History Month, Anti-Bullying Week or World Book Day. Children reflect on how they can make a difference in their everyday lives.

Wednesday – Child-Led Celebration of the Word

Each week, children help to prepare and lead this celebration in Year 1 and 2. They work towards choosing prayers, setting up the prayer focus, sharing the Gospel, and inviting others to respond. This is a wonderful way for our children to grow in confidence, take responsibility, and show that they too can be leaders of prayer and worship.

Thursday – Celebration of the Word (Sunday Gospel)

On Thursdays, we listen carefully to the Gospel for the previous Sunday. This helps us to connect with the wider Church family. Children hear, reflect and respond to God’s Word in ways that are meaningful to them.

Friday – Celebration of Our Values: Love, Learn, Pray

At the end of the week, we come together to celebrate our school values. We thank God for the ways we have shown love, for the things we have learned, and for the times we have prayed together. We also share achievements, kindness, and moments of joy from the week. This is a time to rejoice and give thanks as one family of faith.  We celebrate birthdays, our Gold Leaf award and our Headteacher's Hot Chocolate Award.

Through these daily celebrations, our children learn that prayer is not just words – it is song, silence, action, reflection, and joy. Together, we are growing as a community of faith, love and hope.
