At St Anne Line Infant School, our Design and Technology curriculum reflects our Catholic values of Love, Learn, Pray, supporting every child to develop a practical understanding of the world, while encouraging creativity, resilience, reflection, and responsibility. Our curriculum is also enquiry-led, book-linked, and carefully sequenced following Strong Foundations principles, ensuring pupils build knowledge, skills, and confidence progressively.

    Love

We nurture a love of making, building, and problem-solving by encouraging children to collaborate, support one another, and take pride in their creations. Pupils explore ideas and imagination through hands-on experimentation with materials and tools, learning that their creativity is a gift from God to be used for good and to show care for others.

Each unit is linked to a high-quality book, providing context, inspiration, and real-world examples that spark curiosity and purpose. Units begin with an overarching enquiry question, framing learning and helping pupils make meaningful connections. Every lesson includes a lesson-level enquiry question, encouraging pupils to reflect, ask questions, and investigate solutions.

    Learn

Through a carefully planned curriculum, children develop technical knowledge and design skills in structures, mechanisms, textiles, and food. They investigate how products are made, experiment with different materials, and learn to design, make, and evaluate with increasing independence.

The curriculum follows Strong Foundations principles, ensuring that skills and knowledge are built sequentially, revisited, and applied in progressively challenging contexts. This helps pupils develop critical thinking, adapt designs, solve problems creatively, and reflect on their choices—laying the groundwork for confident, independent designers.

    Pray

We foster moments of reflection, helping children consider how thoughtful design can support well-being, show love for others, and contribute to the stewardship of God’s world. Drawing on themes from Religious Education, pupils learn how design can express values such as compassion, gratitude, and responsibility.

Sustainability and purpose are emphasised: pupils explore choices such as reusing materials or designing with intention, reflecting our Catholic commitment to care for God’s creation.
