At St Anne Line Catholic Infant School we believe that a strong foundation in reading, writing, mathematics, and other core subjects is a vital part of school life, but we consider that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding is fundamental to the development of our children, central to their growth and at the heart of what we would say education is about.

Our school values interlink with the fundamental British values of: Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance; our pupils are prepared for life as citizens of the United Kingdom.

Each year we take part in a ceremony at Brentwood Cathedral. Each school within the Brentwood Diocese nominates a pupil to be their Citizen of the Year. This award is presented by the Bishop.

Democratic values are an intrinsic part of St. Anne Line Catholic Infant School’s ethos. Adults listen to children’s views and value their opinions. Pupils also have the opportunity for their voices to be heard through the School Council, pupil voice survey, the class worry box.

At the beginning of the year, each class creates a charter about how they want their classroom learning environment to be. All children make suggestions and agree to uphold the charter by colouring their handprint.

The school helps pupils to develop their understanding of individual liberty, self-knowledge, confidence and self-esteem through our Catholic ethos – particularly in our expectations of how we treat each other. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour choices and learning. Mutual respect and tolerance for others is promoted through Religious Education, SMSC education and assemblies. Online Safety lessons help children make choices in a safe manner.

Spiritual Development

Our families at St Anne Line Catholic Infant School often choose a Catholic education for their child as they wish them to have a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. Religious Education is central to the ethos of our school. Our links with the Holy Trinity Catholic Church are an important part of our Spiritual Development.

We recognise that families around us and those that join the school often represent other faiths and have diverse beliefs. We encourage children to reflect on other religions and beliefs and to respect other viewpoints as an important part of how we are all different.  

The spirituality of our children is shown through their,

• ability to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise
• interest in and respect for different people’s faiths, feelings and values
• sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them.
• use of imagination and creativity in their learning.
• willingness to reflect on their own experiences.

Moral Development

We believe that children’s educational experiences should support their progress as moral people and citizens in addition to their academic progress.  We offer a wide range of experiences and activities, which combined with our general school policies promote each child’s personal development of the core values needed to be a successful, productive and valuable member of our society. 

We think of other people in our community and work hard to raise money and collect funds, food or resources for those in need. We work with a variety of charities such as, CAFOD to show our support practically.  Our annual Harvest Festival food collection is donated to our local Food Bank.​​​​​​​

Our Golden Rules have been developed to ensure the messages about the Rule of Law is consistently delivered to the children.  Positive behaviour is recognised through classroom sticker charts and rewards.  Good behaviour, attitudes and achievements are celebrated in a special assembly every Friday.

The moral compass of our children is shown through their:

• ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and ability to apply this understanding in their own lives, recognise legal boundaries and, in so doing, respect the civil and criminal law of England.
• understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions.
• interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.

Social Development

Children at St Anne Line Catholic Infant school are supported in their social development through playground activities, forest school provision, PSHE lessons and our Learning Mentor.

The social skills of our children is shown through their:

• use of a range of social skills in different contexts, for example working and socialising with other pupils, including those from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
• willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings, including by volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively.
• acceptance of and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; they develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

Cultural Development

Through our curriculum and spiritual life of the school pupils are made aware of our culturally diverse society. The school community is rich in its diversity and other religions are studied within Religious Education. As part of our core values regardless of ability, faith, heritage or race, pupils often take the initiative in fundraising for international charities. We celebrate the diversity of our school community through our International Christmas Fayre, when we encourage all our families to come together to share their food and traditions.
