It is vital that basic number facts are learnt and committed to memory to enable children to explore calculations efficiently. These number facts will be practiced and developed at school and where you can please support fluent recall of these facts also.
Work down the table below:
Say numbers in order from 1-10 forwards | Begin at one and count on in 1’s to 10 |
Say numbers in order from 1-10 backwards | Begin at 10 and count back in 1’s to 1 |
Count on from any given number between 1-10 | Start at 4 and count on to 9 Start at 2 and count on 7 |
Count back from any given number between 1-10 | Start at 9 and count back to 2 Start at 5 and count back to 3 |
Know number bonds of 5 | Fluently & rapidly recall and understand 2 numbers which add to the sum of 5 0+5 1+4 2+3 3+2 4+1 5+0 |
Know the associated subtraction facts for bonds of 5 | If 4 + 1 = 5 then 5 - 1 = 4 etc….. |
Know number bonds of 10 | Fluently & rapidly recall and understand 2 numbers which add to the sum of 10 0+10 1+9 2+8 3+7 etc…. |
Know the associated subtraction facts for bonds of 10 | If 4 + 6 = 10 then 10 - 4 = 6 etc….. |
Repeat the first 4 steps with numbers to 20 | |
Use knowledge of bonds of 10 to know bonds of 20 including associated subtraction facts. | |
Repeat the first 4 steps with numbers to 100 | |
Read and spell numbers as words to 100 | 1 - one 2-two etc… |
Skip count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s | Count in 2’s to 20 Count in 5’s to 100 Count in 10’s to 100 |
