Phonics
Phonics Intent
Our aim is for all children to leave our school with the skills to decode and read. We know that systematic synthetic phonics is a secure approach in teaching children to to read and we ensure all our learners have a secure knowledge of the sounds individual or combinations of letters make.
Phonics Implementation
We teach phonics through Read Write Inc which is a DFE approved programme. Phonics lessons are taught daily in Reception and Year 1 and to those children in year 2 who need additional support. The children are carefully matched to a specific coloured Read Write Inc book and children on this same colour set of books are taught in a group together.
In order to support phonics at home, the children are sent home with a copy of the book they are currently working on in their lessons and a linked Read Write Inc Home reading book. These 2 books have guidance and information for families inside their covers.
We run phonics and reading workshops for families throughout the academic year, which include demonstrations of lessons so that families are able to support their child at home using consistent techniques and language.
